At the dawn of 2012, I was still counting down the days to
the end of my time as a middle school teacher, and Abigail was continuing to
enjoy her first year staying at home with Amos. At the beginning of March, we were delighted to find out
that we were going to have our second child, who would only be 16 months
younger than Amos. (Well, I don’t
know if Abigail would have described herself as delighted at the time, but she
would come around eventually). So
after finding out we were going to have a second child, we did the only thing
that any sane couple would do: we began planning our trip to an all-inclusive
resort in Mexico. I was also
looking for any job at the time that did not entail working with 12-13 year
olds.
At the end of the longest school year ever, Abigail and I
were so grateful to be able to enjoy time together taking in views of the
beautiful Caribbean and avoiding the heat of the Mexican sun. When we came back from Mexico, I was
able to get a job in teaching Special Education at Joplin High School. It has been a wonderful, rewarding
job. Abigail is continuing to
enjoy her time at home, loving her husband and son (now sons, as of October 28th,
when Silas John joined our family!), bringing her creativity to bear in our
home, and serving the kids in our church through Mystery Kids. We are also serving in our church as
Community Group leaders.
After really considering teaching overseas next year, we
have decided that we will most likely stay in Joplin for awhile longer. Surprisingly, we are excited about
this. God has connected us with
this place and with these people, so we are glad to be able to continue to
learn, grow, serve, and enjoy life here.
It’s also nice to be so close to both of our families. We have realized the importance of this after having
kids. The grandparents sure love
playing with Amos, who loves to run around outside, eat rocks, swing sticks, be
chased, speak his own unintelligible yet convincing language, and now love on
his new brother.
John 1:16 – “For from his fullness we have all received,
grace upon grace.” We are thankful
to have received from God more than we could have ever imagined.
