ivan jude - week 6

Wow, what a full, fun week we have had!  In order to keep this post from containing 100 pictures, I'm going to focus on Ivan's Christmas week.

We loaded everyone and everything up last Friday to head to my parents house to celebrate Christmas a little early with them.  The doctor had upped his dose of Zantac but it at that point it still didn't seem to be helping too much.  Here's how he spent most of those two days... in someone's arms.

He's a pretty content guy if he's being held.  Too bad Mom doesn't have 18 arms!  Luckily, with family at Christmas, there are lots of arms to go around.
It seemed like the increased dosage of Zantac finally started working on Sunday.  He was happy while eating, happy while up and would go down for a nap without a fuss.  Then we'd have to wake him up to eat again.  That was a complete turn-around from his first 5 weeks of life.

It felt weird for Jason to go back to work on Monday and Tuesday after having already celebrated one Christmas, but we made the most of it.  We tackled some more Christmas fun!  Claydough handprints
Here Amos is saying, "This is where Baby Jesus goes, Daddy"
This was the first year where it actually made sense to Amos and he looked forward to adding each member.
A little more Christmas cooking.  The sprinkles were a big hit.
Squeezing a bath before brothers got up.  I think I gave Amos a bath daily.  I'm not going to tell you how long it had been since Ivan had his previous bath.
Ivan was up on Christmas morning for some singing and the Christmas story.

Ivan sporting his new hair-do!  He definitely has lost hair the most drastically of all the boys.
Then that evening, Nana & Papa, Jeffrey and Granny surprised us with a quick trip.  Ivan slept through most of it after not sleeping much that day.  His brothers didn't mind too much opening his presents for him.
Ivan started smiling this week.  Not long enough, or purposeful enough to catch it on camera, but it is always so fun when you get a smile, no matter what reason.  He'll also let out some noises other than crying.  Amos says he's talking to him.

And just because I think its fun!  Here's the other boys about the same age!  They are brothers for sure!

merry christmas 2014

Dear Friends,

Toward the beginning of 2014, in February, we got pregnant with our third child.  This is the first time we actually made the purposeful choice to get pregnant. Apparently, we finally figured out how it works!  In March, after much discussion about whether to stay in Joplin, the magnetic force field of the 4-States continued to draw us in.  So we decided to put our house on the market in order to move into something that would accommodate our growing family and hopefully be better for the budget.  After keeping a nearly spotless house for three constant months (great job, Abigail!), we went under contract in June and sold our house at the end of July.  During the middle of this time, Abigail and I took a trip to the Black Hills of South Dakota.  It made her a little crazy, but it was well worth it.

The only problem with selling our house was that we didn’t yet have a new house.  So we got to make the westward move to the great state of Kansas, where we lived with our parents/in-laws/Gramps and Grammy for about a month.  We closed on our new house in September.  We were very excited to get a “fixer-upper” that was cheaper, bigger, and out in the hills, fields, and woods of the Ozarks.  I had a few weeks of work on the house before we were able to make it livable enough for the rest of the family, and they officially moved in toward the end of September.  Without the help of our family and church, the house would still probably not be livable.  After moving in, we’ve been able to experience the joys of owning a house with “character” – patching the leaking roof, having the plumber chuckle as he came to fix our clogged sink, telling us that pipes are not supposed to run uphill, then helping my dad as he re-plumbed much more of the house than we had planned.

Abigail, the organized planner of the family, was certainly being tested at this time, as she was due to have a baby in a few weeks and we weren’t even totally settled into the new house.  But we finished most of the necessary work with a couple weeks to spare before Baby Vance’s arrival.  Though most everyone was certain it was going to be a girl, unnamed Baby Boy arrived on November 14th.  11/14/14.  A birth date deemed acceptable by Abigail’s strict code of birth date acceptability.  After much deliberation, we decided to name him Ivan Jude.  His big brothers were so excited to meet him!

We had Ivan home for a few days before we had the biggest scare of our lives.  He was breathing incredibly fast and seemed to be gasping for air, so we took him to the ER.  After some assessment, they realized that his lungs were filled with fluid and he was not getting the oxygen that he needed.  Before we knew it, the room was filled with many doctors and nurses, they put a breathing tube down his throat, and put an IV in his umbilical cord.  Soon, they decided to life flight him to Children’s Mercy in Kansas City, where he would eventually spend 10 days.  Doubts and questions arise during times like these.  But ultimately, we came to see how fragile all life really is, how God is gracious in sustaining any amount of life we have on this earth, how He is present and holding us in His love even when we’re questioning Him, and how much love and grace can be extended to us through other people.  We have been loved and supported so well by our family, our church, and many of my co-workers during this time.

We would never choose many of the things that we go through, but this is the race that is set before us.  We’re called to endure, looking to the One who endured more suffering than we could ever imagine because of his great love for us.  We can endure, knowing that this love will never leave us alone, giving of ourselves for others, the way so many of you have given of yourselves to us.

And here is a look at Christmas' past...

ivan jude - week 5

Well we made it.  A full week on our own.  Somehow.   Ivan's definitely showing me who's boss.  I've got a third child on my hands.  Good thing he likes the swing! Ha!

But look at this face...

To be honest, I'm not even sure what all we did this week.  I blame it on lack of sleep and not enough coffee, or oreos.  Both of which may soon be leaving my diet do to a certain someone's possible reflux. He's now been on medicine for it for about a week.  Some days are better than others, but it is near impossible for him to settle into a nice deep sleep.  And there is always lost of grunting.

Perspective:  He's here with us and breathing!  He's still been very stuffed up, which my doctor says may just be the dry heat in the house.  Fun!

Amongst the crazy newborn days, we managed some Christmas celebrating.

Window clings.

Hot chocolate.

Christmas candy helpers.

And thanks to my wonderful friend, my pantry now contains peppermint tea.  Where were you all my life?  It is the answer to my late night warm drink dilemma.  And don't you love my new mug sweater!
When Ivan's out with us, he's usually surrounded!
 He doesn't mind.
And in case you missed my other post, check out these guys.  I love our crazy!

month 1

As you can tell, the boys are in love with their brother.  We've had a CRAZY first month!  We are glad to have to behind us and so excited to see what the future brings.

Favorite things:
Amos - His "collections."  He's constantly finding little surprises to add to his "collection" of things and show Dad when he gets home.
Silas - Would you guess... Balls!  He is still in love with balls and almost always has one in his hand.
Ivan - Milk... isn't every one month-old's favorite thing milk?

ivan jude - week 4

This guy.
He's had a really great 4th week of life.  I think he knew that the first three days without Dad were going to be hard on Mom, so he's been on his best behavior.  Eating and sleeping like a champ.

I'm still in the first month stage of night-time feedings.  It's all new again...getting up at night isn't so bad...cuddling a sweet newborn... but the rubber meets the road for me during month 2.  So you might pray for me as I transition into...I'm tired... will I ever sleep again... please just go to sleep!

Ivan's been hanging out some new places this week.  When there aren't as many arms around to hold this sweet guy, it's time for tummy time.
The big brothers thought it was cool too.  Ivan, you need to work on your cheese...
Ivan wanted to check out my new rug.
Can it get any more adorable than this?  God knew what he was doing making newborns so CUTE!

We hung out with Grammy and Gramps and the cousins on Saturday.  Grammy brought over some fun props for pictures.  Silas all but refused to participate, but everyone else was all about it.

Never a dull moment when all the kids are around.

On Sunday we made it to church for the first time in a month.  Luckily the random newborn feedings worked out in such a way that we were all able to eat, get ready and make it to church almost on time.  It was so good to be back we our church family that loves and supports us!

We soaked up all our time with Dad on Monday and Tuesday.  He would go back to work on Wednesday.  Amos had a fight with one of our barstools, but luckily "he's tough." And a little bit of icecream makes everything better.

We've taken it pretty easy these last 3 days as we've eased back into Dad going back to work.  The boys are adjusting back to a new normal and spend most of their time playing together.  Today, after playing in their room together, they both came out to tell me bye and that they were going to work to teach kids!  They are some kind of sweet.

They both love Ivan to pieces and are always excited to just sit beside him and "watch him" for me as Amos likes to put it.  I'm not so sure about Silas' "watching," but Amos does a pretty good job.

Lastly, I've been working on the house more this week.  We've got our Christmas decorations out and all of my early Christmas presents have arrived.  (Check out my almost finished gallery wall)
Stocking all hung from the bookshelf with care...  Amos asks every morning if there's anything in his stocking yet.  Today he said it looked a little lumpy.

And just because I can't help myself.  Here's the banister before and after.
